200 and a lot more to go...

'Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words,' Robert Frost. And I truly believe in it. My first poem was 'When You Came'. I don't know what inspired it, may be a movie or another poem but I do remember, I wrote it in one go.

There are several poems which I have written in one go and I post them without editing a single word. I may sound a bit narcissist but I love these unedited raw flow of words. It feels words are flowing and your pen, acting as its buddy, is scribbling it on a piece of paper. Oh yes, I write on paper and sometimes on my iPad, which I won for writing a poem.

But even with edited poems, there is one thing in common - Your feelings; be it for the love of your life, December 16th or Facebook likes. You ought to feel it and write it that very moment. If you don't, the poem dies; in softer words, you have delayed its birth. So, it has to be spontaneous. You feel it, you write it.

Few of my unedited, spontaneous poems -

One more thing which I feel for poetry is Connect. People should be able to connect with your emotions, the way you want. Or atleast, they should comprehend your emotions. One reason, I write in very simple language.

Couple of years back someone asked me, how would I like my eulogy to read. I said -

'She wanted to be a poet and died as one.'

*Written as a part of IndiSpire Edition 14 and this post marks the double century on my blog.

  1. About spontaneity agreed...about people connecting...well Saru that can't say because I still have one great work of a great female writer who won a Nobel prize in literature and must admit I do lack the ability to understand it. So it still decorates my book rack and I am really looking for someone who could make me appreciate the work. Same thing about certain paintings, art, sculpture. I guess one's expression is very personal. To be able to understand...and connect is just chance. For all I know most famous poets and writers have died penniless and broke and have achieved glory posthumously when world searched and connected to what they meant or had said.
I would however like urs because am able to understand and connect. Really can't tell what u meant when u composed but I do tell u my thoughts about some of mine over yours. Congratulations on your 200th and wish you many many more. And pls don't talk about eulogy now...not yet...not yet...

    1. Exactly, one should be able to connect. One connect with some writers and with some it's plain words. Actually someone asked about the eulogy and that was my reply. It's always a pleasure hearing from you and thanks a ton for being here, Shivani.

  3. Let me join your joy on this occasion of the 200th post. Poetry and emotions go together, though I don't agree with Wordsworth's definition of poetry as spontaneous overflow of powerful emotions. I'd rather to with T S Eliot who argued that the emotions should undergo a transformation in the crucible of the poet's mind and consciousness.

    1. That's an interesting take on poetry. Sometimes when something touches you and you are not finding the right words to express your emotions; Eliot's definition holds good. Thanks for your wishes and sharing your views. :)

  20. Wow, awesome! Congratulations Saru... thats a great feat! And yes, truly agree about the flow of emotions and the connect that a poem has to have. I love unedited poems too... it gives such a warm feeling inside when you are able to put in words exactly what you have in mind, without having to edit a word of it. Looking forward to many more great poems from you! Kudos!

  22. Congratulations. This is quite a commendable job. I concur on what the quote alludes. Poetry indeed opens the gates to that mode where your conscience expresses itself in a rather untrammeled way. Your renditions become more of a manifestation than a genesis as it is with other forms of writing. 200 poems from you and I could write only two. :P I guess this is an apt occasion to share one with you. :)

  24. Ah! Saru - THAT's why I am no good at appreciating or writing poetry (I did try at school but it was more rhymes than poetry as I can see now) - my brain kicks in and I start thinking much before I start feeling.

  34. To my mind you have given a wonderful tip to other poets & beginners at this time of reaching a landmark."You ought to feel it and write it that very moment. If you don't, the poem dies; in softer words, you have delayed its birth. So, it has to be spontaneous. You feel it, you write it."
May many more wonderful lines flow from your pen!
