She Inspires Many Canaries

My song had lilt, she used to sit on window sill and smile.
Mindlessly staring at me, holding her only child.
Her kohl was smudged, she swallowed her pain.
She walked freely around the house but her soul was chained.
Past noon, she held her baby close to her chest.
In those empty moments, she often wept.
I sang happy rhymes, painted all that was grey.
I told her many times, people do go far far away.
I was a lost canary but she was more adrift than me.
Pregnant and lost her husband when she was only twenty three.
It saddened me, her sorrows didn't ebb.
Her husband did die but she was dead.
I abandoned her, she never came back from his pyre.
Burning herself each day in that fire.
But like a phoenix, she rose nevertheless.
Churning sorrows into strength that she never expressed.
She built an ebony closet, stacked all her pain in there.
Armored with self-belief with no sorrow to share.
No knight in shining armor, she stood by her own side.
Her head held high, with hard work and pride.
I don't sing for her now, she penned her own song.
How to rise from nothing and be strong.

*Two years back, I wrote about my friend who lost her husband in a car accident on her birthday. She was pregnant and she delivered a baby girl. It fills me with pride and happiness that she, inspite of her problems, worked hard and is now working as a Probationary Officer in a reputed bank.

Salute to all those who never give up in the toughest of times. They are truly inspiring!

  1. God bless her... this is a wonderful tribute. Sometimes you don't think you are capable of immense courage under duress until it is the only option left to you in life..

  2. Very sad but thrilled to know she was able to tap her inner strength and placed a good head above her shoulders. It is easier said than done. I will never be able to fully understand or realize her plight and the tough journey she had to embark upon, but today I am proud of her and want to show my respect to this amazing lady. God bless her and her little angel, who actually gave her enough reasons and all the right purpose and direction to their life....Bravo and my heartwarming wishes to her. Great words especially "She build an ebony closet, stacked all her pain in there.
Armored with self-belief with no sorrow to share." ...Very clever choice of the word "ebony" ....

  8. I remember reading that poem of yours. It was very touching and sad.
This one is even more touching but it's not sad, and since it's on a true story, that's a welcome change.
"Her husband did die, but she was dead" is reminiscent of the emotion transpired in your earlier work and it's the most beautiful line of the poem.
Great to know about a Phoenix in a beautiful poetic way!

Being Human

Under the roof of winter, Latches of my door open without making a sound. It's cold out there, Someone lost his ground. My soul shivers, Not that I'm cold. Someone from my land, Sleeps under the bridge while dreaming of gold. How can I... tuck myself in the quilt? When the winter storm is blowing, Hopes they have built. I have to get up, Do something... Before I start questioning who am I? And, they start saying...'Humanity dies.' Let's work out something, Take a resolution. Walk across all kinds of bridges, And, just be human... From centuries people are migrating for work or for better opportunities. But, not everyone has a smooth sailing...some live under miserable conditions. Most heart wrenching fact is nobody helps them, not even people from their own countries. I know, everybody is busy chasing the bigger purpose of life. But don't you think we should help people in need? Let's try to be better human being...

I Am Not Alone

Last year blessed me, He walked silently into my life. It was Love, That took me in its stride. One evening we walked holding hands, Then, I told him what I felt in heart. He said we were one soul, Who were living in parts. To bring the parts together, We fought with the world and tied the knot. Being one soul, Gave life a whole new spot. Chirping birds, floating clouds, Nature conspired for us. Always swimming against the tide, Life was in an adrenaline rush. This year cursed me, He walked silently out of my life. It was Death, That took him in its stride.       Yesterday his soul was saying, Fearing memories will fade, he can’t move on. He will stay and admire me, Standing always by my side from dusk to dawn. Rewind - September 2023

I wrote the following in September. Sometimes, I feel I will forget the art of writing couplets because I am not writing at all this year. I strongly believe you have to practice to hone your craft. And I am not doing that. Perhaps I schedule a time to write a poem. Or I need better time management skills. Date Published 09/05/2023 मुझे उसके जाने का इतना अफ़सोस नहीं हुआ  जितना इस बात का कि इतने सालों तक उसे रहने ही क्यों दिया  Love, Saru
