The Curious Case of Facebook Likes

Thy shall scroll down and down,
Till you come by a post.
No, not yours, not of your friends,
A celebrity picture liked by most.

Fifty-three shares, ninety-eight comments,
Crawled the server of the host.
Wonder what the celebrity would give...
His Lamborghini free of cost?

Is it a race or craze?
...I better find out.
As when I share a social cause,
No one listens even if I shout.

I curate the timeline,
For what's happening in my friends' lives.
Have no interest in knowing,
Saif took Kareena as his second wife.

The laziest man alive,
Discovered the LIKE button.
Now he must be wondering,
Why everybody acts so sudden.

Please don't spam the feed,
It's a public plea.
For celebrity news we would rather,
Flip to Page 3.

P. S. : You can LIKE, SUPERLIKE and SHARE this post. :)

  4. Saru.. I propose a new “Super Duper Like” button for this one. You have actually invented a new genre here: Poetical satire. Brilliant timing as well as rhyming there! I have always wondered about people’s surfing behaviors in Facebook and I guess it is a research paper in itself. But you have so humorously brought it out here. While tickling the funny bone you have also pricked the mind to think. Lovely read!

    1. It is indeed something on which we can have a debate. Yes, we can explore more in this genre. Thanks for agreeing and a wonderful comment. :)

  5. This was lovely, Saru. In a way, I am glad for the phenomenon. It tells me that what you are doing is important and not frivolous. Nice idea for a poem and post. Nice SEO, so to speak, too. :)

    1. Actually, it's for people who just share Page 3 stuff. For bloggers like us, it s surely a remarkable thing. About SEO, I think I can never crack it beyond its full form :P

      Thanks for reading dear!

  6. Saru, good to see your poetry in its true elements:) You quoted the best examples for likes and superlikes of the profile pic changes, new Lamborighini and of course remarriage of a much married Saif!Since I am still not lazy, I refrain from pressing the Like button:)

    1. Like button has become synonymous to many other things but what I don't like is when people like celebrity pictures and lend no support to good work.

Glad you liked the poem Sir!

  7. Haha, witty witty one Saru. Poetry with sarcasm loaded with humor. The facebook drama is now becoming unknown to me, since I have been deactiviated for more than 6 months. But indeed wish people would like the social causes more than the Saif ki shaadi stuff!

  27. Superlike;) Yet still glued to FB:P

    ReplyDelete
  28. Even though this poem was meant to be funny and it surely is but couldn't agree more on the social causes sharing part. People tend to like, comment or share only if it a "good" news. We will get 100's of likes and loads of fake comments but no one cares when we actually share something serious about a cause we believe in or something like that.

That being said, we still can't quit this addiction called Facebook. :D

Frankly speaking I am not sure whether the Like button in facebook has either dumbed down people or whether the Like button is appealing to the people who cannot write a single sentence in english.

    1. I think, later is more relevant. Without the application of any mind, just press the button.

  30. Super like like everyone else here.

The 'like' button serves many purposes but at the same time is a shortcut to a long winding comment. There are days when I like and dislike the 'like' button.

    Joy always,

  47. This is truly an awesome poem! I agree with each lines you've written. People around the world are getting really addicted to FB. A couple of weeks ago, when I told someone that I don't have a FB account, he gave me an odd look. I thought to myself that I must be one of the few in the world without a FB account so I created one the next day :)
The person who created the Like button must be very, very proud!

  50. We are celebrity crazy people and our media ensures we remain that way. Then we find someone sharing and promoting social causes and we shy away thinking others will judge us based on the causes and what friends will think etc.. Facebook has the power to unite the world like no leader can! Wonder when that day will come.

    ReplyDelete

    1. It has the power but it is used for entertainment. I hope the day comes soon when we use it for better purposes...
