Celebrate Your Good Days, Plan for Your Bad Ones

Like happiness, problems are a part of life. I believe - how we behave in our bad days define our good ones. It shapes both our character and destiny. I met with a terrible accident after 12th standard board examination. Rest side of my body was paralysed and my left side was bruised. Needless to say, it was the most difficult time for me. More than the physical pain, the trauma of isolation took a toll on me. To add to my misery, I failed to apply to the Colleges for admission. I filled only one form. My family was so worried about my health that no one paid heed to the last dates of form submission. I think, for parents everything takes a backseat when it comes to their child’s well-being. And while the medical bills mounted as two working parents who had squirrelled away savings money was the least of their concern.

I was a commerce student and the only college I applied had a very high cut-off list. Though I was in the range, but 5% was deducted from my score as I didn’t have maths in 12th standard. It was a rule in Punjab University back in 1999. Bottom line was I had no good college on my platter. There was only one option - take Bachelors of Arts, instead of Commerce. I always wanted to study in a good college. With no other alternative available, and with a very heavy heart, I went for it. So, I did BA from MCM DAV College, Chandigarh. After the physical pain, this was an emotional agony. I saw my friends in Commerce section and myself in the other. As we all know Arts don’t command respect in our country, post recovery I got angry and directionless.

My family doesn’t believe in cribbing and in submitting to the failures. Plus, they believe in fixing things. My mother is against brooding. Acting as a pillar of strength, everyone told me to do something to make up for the lost opportunity. It was then, I decided to pursue CS.  With the support of my family, I excelled at it. I am a rank holder in CS. I am among the top 25 students who cleared the exams. I worked hard, but it was my family who helped to channelise my energy and gave me a gentle push in the right direction. And, made me strong. I learned the best lessons of my life in that tough phase. After three years when all my friends were graduates, I was a graduate with a professional degree to my credit.

Watch the above video - a heartwarming reminder of family’s unflinching support how a little planning can go a long way. We all face adversity but when we plan for uncertainty with the support of our family nothing is possible. #KhudKoKarBuland - plan ahead and win over your adversaries.
