Be ready for your child's future

Image
My parents were a little unconventional. When our neighbours bought a new TV, they preferred to take us on vacation. On every trip to Delhi, my father brought back books for me. It was always something not-so-materialistic from society’s point of view. We hardly understood the difference as there was no other way for us. But when we took our big step into the real world, we realised the importance of - reading books over watching movies, vacations over the second TV in our home and investing on experiences over accumulating the bank balance. My parents prepared us to take charge of our lives. I feel, they did a remarkable job. My parents were financially prepared too. They planned well to support our education. They saved and invested for both me and my brother. However, there were a few instances which acted as a learning lesson for them. Their planning had a few shortcomings. They were ready for College fees but never thought of money for coaching classes, which was a huge

Date with an old song and lost friends

Image
With Hindi songs playing on the radio, I soaked myself in the gorgeous sunset in sub-zero weather. A few seconds later, RJ played the next song and brought back a sea of memories. Song was from a movie that released in 2001. I was in college, too worried for my House Exams that I skipped watching it with my friends. I irked with jealousy when they hummed this song. Apparently, the movie was spectacular, like its cast . I vividly remember thinking of being in a better place, with a new gang of girls, and without those eccentric friends. And, hoping that time would change for better! 15 years later, time has certainly changed. I am without those friends. They are with new ones. And, I am sipping tea with Bollywood music and sunset as my companions. Is it destiny? Am I lonely? No, it’s time. It’s wicked. It’s powerful. Above all, time is a trick master. It tricks you to dream about future and when you reach that ‘future,’ it makes your past unbelievably good. You feel like an idi

Soundarya Sabun Nirma

Image
It was a ruthless day when I discovered my real identity. As a teenager, I struggled through hot girls, rich girls, and famous-for-nothing girls. I often felt like a lost puppy in the crowd of bitches. Amidst the ting-tong of Doordarshan commercial, finally, one day I found answers to all my questions. My ray of enlightenment was none other than - Nirma Soap Ad. This karmic journey started the day my cousin infused the thought that a soap defines you. He bathed with Dettol as he was a cleanliness freak. And I should choose a soap that fits my character. When I gleefully jumped at being Liril Girl, he looked with disdain. With one hand he pointed at Preity Zinta’s poster and with other towards the mirror. I nodded. I had no dimples or shorts to be that cool. Even the bottom of my skirt was triple folded to adjust my growing height and our middle-class income. On that day of summer vacation, my arduous journey began. If there is a soap that my fits my short-rounded-desperate

#TextToDad

When I was in college, I sent my dad a text message as I was too ashamed to say sorry to him in person. One day while checking his new phone, I stumbled upon it. He has changed his phone endless times, but he still has that message. I guess, it's stored in the SIM. Today when he said he is not well. I recalled all those little fights that made our father-daughter relationship strong. And, my heart weak with love for him. Love you, dad. Get well soon!
